    The largest astroturf install we've done is 150m². On this install, we had to complete in two parts using a timber frame to prevent movement and a joining tape and contact adhesive to join the two rolls of grass.

  • What is the correct installation method for artificial grass?

    As with all landscaping installations, the sub-base should be structurally sound and drainage is at

    the forefront of the planning process this is no different when installing artificial grass. The ground prep should begin with a minimum of 100mm below the finished level. This depth will be

    dependent on the substrate. A good quality geotextile membrane should be installed with a

    minimum of 100mm overlap for larger areas, a mini of 50-75mm of type one roadstone should be

    installed and compacted in layers to achieve maximum compaction, levels should be checked with a laser level and any variations can be addressed. Grano dust should be used as opposed to sharp sand which should be avoided due to, not only the organic matter held within the sand, which can lead to unwanted growth and insects setting up camp, but also the difference in density when the sand is wet and when the sand is dry. This can lead to movement in the sub-base. Grano, on the other hand, is a very clean product with great drainage properties, it is a slightly more expensive product but well worth it in the long term. As regards fixing fake grass there are different situations where a treated timber frame can be used to border the sub-base and either pin or glued to the frame, i.e if the grass is to be used for ball games or school playgrounds where the movement of the grass needs to be prevented. It would be acceptable to lay the grass without pinning as long as the grass is bordered by paving or pavers as artificial grass is heavy enough not to blow away, especially if a filling product is used also this allows the grass to expand and contract slightly with the changing of the seasons.

    This method would be preferred as long as the grass was not subject to heavy continuous use. Finally, an electric power broom should be used to lift the pile and though not all artificial grass products require an infill product, an infill should be used where required. In addition, when installing grass in schools, playgrounds and domestic gardens where children are playing and/or climbing frames are in use, foam padded underlay should be installed beneath the artificial grass and all critical fall spec is available on request.
